Maa Brahmacharini (Uma or Tapacharini) is worshipped on
second day of Navratri as the goddess who performed ‘Tapasya’
(penance) (Brahma – Tapa, Charini – Performer ).
Hindu Mythology
After Kushmanda form, Maa Parvati took birth at the home of
Daksha Prajapati. In this form the Maa Parvati was a great Sati and her
unmarried form is worshipped as Maa Brahmacharini Navratri.
Goddess Brahmacharini did severe penance to get Lord Shiva
as her husband. It is stated that she spent 1000 years on the diet of flowers
and fruits and another 100 years on the diet on leafy vegetables while sleeping
on the floor. Further she followed strict fasting regimen while staying at open
place in scorching summers, harsh winters and stormy rains. Without food her
body became extremely lean, thin and became like Skelton. Due to her hard Tapa
the whole of the Universe was disturbed and Sky, Earth and Patal was shaken.
The Gods, the Rishis , the Siddhas, Munis all eulogized her
penance which was un precedent virtuous action, ultimately Lord Brahma through
an oracle went and addressed Brahmacharini in a very polite and pleasant manner
Great Goddess, till date so far no one in the universe has ever practiced
such a difficult penance. You are the first having done it. This is unique and
wonderful deed being praised in four Yuga (four quarters).Your all desires
shall be fulfilled and sure you shall get Lord Shiva as your divine consort.
Therefore Maa Brahmcharini personifies love and loyalty and
provides knowledge and wisdom.
Those who worship her, attain, Tap (Religious
Austerity), Tyagi (Sacrifice), and Vairagya (Asceticism).
She is shown to hold Japa mala (rosary beads) in her right
hand and Kamandal in left hand. This form of Shakti as per Yoga Shastras
is present in second gonad chakra (in Allopathy gonad plexus) called
Svadhisthana Chakra. The bija sound for the chakras is VAM which removes
attachments. In Ayurveda the 2nd Chakra represents the water element.
In mythology ‘white’ represents purity of mind; beaded
rosary or japa mala represents continuous efforts (meditation and
concentration) and Kamandal represents acceptance and water in it represents
pure thoughts.
